THE ZONTA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION This Foundation is a charitable non-profit Corporation with funds and programs managed by a Board of Directors. It was established to maintain or aid social, educational, charitable or other activities serving the common welfare primarily through the making of grants. It is considered "public" because it derives funds from many donors rather than from a single source as is usually the case with a "private" Foundation. The Zonta International Foundation administers the funds for Zonta projects, ie.: * The Rose Fund receives unrestricted contributions that are used to cover general expenses related to the operations and administration of Zonta services, programs and other activities *The Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards *The WHPPI Fund: World Headquarters Property *The Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Awards *The Biennial International Service Program *The Jane M Klausman Women in Business Scholarships *The ZISVAW Program (Zonta International Strategies to Prevent Violence Against Women)seeks to reduce the incidence of violence against women and girls by changing personal and/or political knowledge, attitudes and behaviour contributing to violence against women. INTERNATIONAL SERVICE Our LONG TERM SERVICE PROJECT, is the ongoing support of the ZONTA INTERNATIONAL AMELIA EARHART FELLOWSHIP AWARDS. Amelia Earhart was a Member of Zonta from 1928 to 1937, firstly in Boston, then in New York During the 1920's and 1930's flyers made headlines, and Amelia Earhart was aviation's leading female figure. She was the first woman to -fly the Atlantic alone -fly an autogyro -receive the US Distinguished Flying Cross -fly from Hawaii to the US mainland (on 11 January - when Zontians celebrate Amelia Earhart Day) -attempt to fly around the world at the equator In addition to setting records, she promoted the airline industry, writing articles for Cosmopolitan Magazine and lecturing on aviation. In 1935 she began an educational project as a Counsellor to women students at Purdue University. As an early advocate of women's rights, her independent spirit and encouragement of women to compete and excel in any field which interested them made her a popular role model. When in 1937 she disappeared in the course of her last flight, her fate was shrouded in mystery ..... her spirit transcended its generation and she became a heroine for all ages. By her example, Amelia Earhart encourged women to expand their horizons by exploring occupations and holding positions beyond those traditionally held by women. THE AMELIA EARHART FELLOWSHIP AWARDS are offered anually to women for graduate study in aerospace related science and engineering. Since the beginning of the Fellowship in 1938, there have been 878 Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards, totalling over US$4.4 million, to 573 Fellows from 52 countries. |
