Our Club
The ZONTA CLUB OF BALLARAT Inc. was sponsored by the Zonta Club of Melbourne and organised by Elizabeth Lucas, OAM. It was chartered in 1978 on United Nations Day October 24, a date considered propitious given Zonta's consultative status with the United Nations and representation at UN sites in New York, Paris, Geneva and Vienna. Interestingly, two other Zonta clubs share the same Charter date - Lugano, Switzerland chartered in 1964, and Nancy in France, chartered in 1966.
The CHARTER DINNER was held at Craig's Royal Hotel in Ballarat on April 3, 1979 with 37 Charter Members. International President-Elect Dr. Shirley Schneider of Springfield Ohio in the USA presented the Charter to President Val Sarah, before Zontians and guests from all over Australia and New Zealand, and two Zontians from Canada including Dorothy Thompson of the ZC Hamilton 1, Ontario who organised the first 12 Clubs in New Zealand and Australia in the 1960's and 1970's. HOW DOES OUR CLUB FIT IN WITH ZONTA INTERNATIONAL? Zonta is a unified organisation with a suite of offices in Oak Brook, Illinois, USA, just outside Chicago, and operates through a very simple structure. An International Board communicates with members through a system of management at Districts, Area and Club levels. Our club ID is 23-4-0863 - district 23, area 4, club 863. There are currently 32 districts in Zonta. Each member has an individual identification number for direct communication. There is a highly motivating level of communication, with regular contact via the Zontian Magazine, monthly e-newsletters direct from ZI headquarters, district newsflashes and club newsletters.
